Aldfaer versus Gramps
Posted Sunday, 14 February 2010 By Niels
I received a question whether Joaktree works better with Aldfaer or Gramps. Below is my answer.
====
I have not tested all software programs. Joaktree is designed to support as many GedCom generating programs as possible, but I am not sure whether I succeeded. It certainly works with my own program (Brothers Keeper) but that is not an open source (and therefore free) program.
I think that Aldfaer works properly, but not 100% correct. The GedCom file has for "death" a value "Y" (I do not understand why) next to the date and location of death. This results in the following display: "Y (May 6, 2002 in Rotterdam)"
instead of "May 6, 2002 in Rotterdam.
My advice is to use your favorite program and try it in a test environment. If it does not work properly, you can always contact me. I am certainly willing to help you out, or to adjust Joaktree to support popular programs like Gramps.

When the GedCom delivers for an event a value, date and place, Joaktree will show this as follows: "value (date place)". When the GedCom only delivers a date and a place, Joaktree will show that as follows: "date place".
For example, an occupation (value, date and place) is shown as follows: "shoemaker (1899 Amsterdam)", while a birth (date, place) is shown as follows: "1899 Amsterdam".
